How often should I change the belt or filter on my vacuum?
Belts: Vacuum belts should be changed about every three or four months. Most are made of rubber and will stretch out from the heat and friction of being used. When they become stretched the brush roller slows down and that will have an effect on cleaning ability. A vacuum can lose up to 50% of its cleaning efficiency after four months of use, depending on how often and how much area you are vacuuming. Commercial vacuums, that are used every day, should have their belt changed more often. Belts are an inexpensive way to ensure that your vacuum is working properly.
Filters: In most cases, should be changed once a year. Some filters need to be changed every 6 months. Some vacuums have washable filters. They can be washed only so much and even though you wash them, it is impossible to get them as clean as they were when they were new. You should check the filter or filters every time you vacuum to see if they are dirty. If they are black or dust-covered you should consider replacing them. Consult your owner’s manual to see how often the manufacturer recommends replacing them. Dirty and clogged filters are the number one reason for motor failure in vacuums. This is especially true with bagless vacuums.
